Surplus Service Awarded California’s Highest Environmental Award

December 6, 2018

Our continued innovative contributions to e-waste recycling solutions with our trademark UpcyclIT® solution has earned us the Governor’s Environmental and Economic Leadership Award (GEELA) – California’s highest environmental honor. With UpcyclIT® we aim to remove the problem of e-waste recycling in the Bay Area landfills by reusing electronics rather than simply recycling them. At Surplus Service, our goal has been to provide eco-friendly solutions that encourage small and big organizations to reuse electronics instead of dumping them in a landfill that could lead to chemical and environmental damage not just to humans, animals/birds but the environment as well.

We take great pride in our e-waste solutions that have provided awareness, information, and knowledge to many businesses and organizations about the disposal and reuse of electronics in a sustainable way. The annual GEELA program is administered by the California Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in partnership with the Natural Resources Agency, the Department of Food and Agriculture, the State Transportation Agency, the Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency, the Government Operations Agency, the Labor Workforce and Development Agency, and the Health and Human Services Agency.

This award is awarded to individuals, organizations, and businesses that have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made notable, voluntary contributions in conserving California’s precious resources, protecting and enhancing the environment, building public-private partnerships and strengthening the state’s economy. At Surplus Service, we strongly believe in giving back to the community in all the ways that we can. The entrants to the GEELA awards had some of the most recognizable companies in California.

California’s Highest Environmental Award , The finalists were chosen by a panel of judges that included the Governor’s Office and the secretaries of the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency; the California Department of Food and Agriculture; California Environmental Protection Agency; the California Government Operations Agency; the California Health and Human Services Agency; the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency; the California Natural Resources Agency; and the State Transportation Agency.

We receive tons of electronics each month. By repairing, refurbishing and reusing these products, we save millions of pounds of hazardous, chemical and toxic substances from landfills and the environment in the Bay area. UpcyclIT® is an economical and sustainable option for business and organizations with single or multi-sites in North America and around California. Our team has been striving endlessly to remove millions of toxic and dangerous e-waste in the Bay area for years. We believe, with a little effort each of us can make a difference to repair, reuse, and remarket products that would otherwise go to waste. With UpcyclIT® about 85% of electronics that range from medical equipment, network, fiber optics, and IT equipment are reused. We continue to deliver the best e-waste solutions that make a difference to the environment.

Thank you, GEELA for the recognition. We are honored and humbled.

Inmate Staff Spotlight: Brandon We want to take a moment to highlight the community outreach that our inmate staff has done in the past. Featured in local news is Brandon, standing on the left of the above image, who takes up a leadership role in activities and conversations held between CTF Inmates and Palma High School students. They both serve as each other's role models by discussing each other's past and the choices they made to get where they are now. The students avoid taking similar actions the led the inmates down a dark path and the inmates learn what positive actions the students are taking in order bring themselves on the right path. It’s a successful and flourishing program that continues to this day. We are proud to support inmates like Brandon by providing them with an opportunity for them to learn valuable skills and work experience that they can in turn use on the outside to earn an honest living when they are released. Surplus Service is honored to make a difference for Brandon and many other of our Incarcerated Individual employees as part of our Certified California Apprenticeship program.
