Sustainability is a core part of our business, but so is community outreach.
Throughout the year, we often volunteer our time and talents to make a difference in the community—not just with protecting the environment but also with sharing our expertise with schools and community groups.
Ultimately, that’s what achieving the triple bottom line of people, planet and profit is all about.
We’re proud of the fact that, in 2015, we were able to work with the Boy Scouts Mt. Diablo Silverado Council to sponsor a Sustainability Eagle Scout Merit Badge.
It all started when our president, Lou Ramondetta, met with the CEO of the Boy Scouts Silverado Council, which covers a vast area from Dublin, CA, to Lake County. After talking about the need to teach more young people about the importance of sustainability, they decided it would be a great idea to have Surplus Service, an award-winning San Francisco Bay Area e-waste management company, sponsor a sustainability merit badge for the council.
The Sustainability Merit Badge is one of the many merit badges that Scouts have to earn on their journey to becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts program.
The requirements look at five areas of sustainability: water, food, energy, community and waste. Candidates for the badge then have presentations from experts and then explore and discuss the following the issues: plastic waste, electronic waste, food waste, species decline, world population or climate change.
In conjunction with several company partners, Lou and John Fenoglio, the Silverado Council CEO, spent a few weeks developing the program and then the Scouts began their journey. In all, about 60 Scouts participated in the program.
As part of the training, we had community, environmental and industry experts come in and talk to the Scouts about their areas of expertise. The Scouts did independent and collaborative projects inside and outside of the classroom.
“I was blown away by how involved and how knowledgeable the Scouts became,” Lou said. “Some of the projects included very involved ideas where they were working with their families to reduce water, garbage or energy.”
We were happy to support the merit badge program, and we hope that more companies are able to work with their community partners to share the importance of sustainability.
